It was a great day of awareness, fundraising for important resources for those living with MG, and such great support in the MG Community. Keep the momentum going! All fundraising pages will remain open through December, so there is still time to reach all of our goals. Reach out to your family, friends, and coworkers and tell them all about your great experience at the walk (be sure to show them all the photos!), and encourage them to support you. Follow up and thank all those that did donate, and please contact the MG Walk Office for any tips on post-event fundraising.

Thank you all for an amazing day, a great event, and for coming together and doing all we can to reach the ultimate finish line…a world without myasthenia gravis!

We are thrilled to announce that the 2016 Central Ohio MG Local Walk Hero is … Jeff Abeson!

Abeson Family

It was back about 10 years ago, around 2006/2007, that Jeff started to notice he had a slight amount of double vision in his right eye. As this was very much a cause of concern for him, and wanting to know what was going on, he saw a multitude of eye doctors and neurologists at this time. Unfortunately, there was no success in finding a diagnosis. Shortly after all of this, Jeff suffered what he describes as “an explosion in his head”, what he thought could be an aneurysm that led to him losing all control in his right eye. Not sure if it was all related, but wanting to know the answer to what was causing all of this, he eventually started seeing Dr. Steven Katz, a neuro-ophthalmologist at OSU. They went through a whole series of approaches to figure out what was going on, confidently coming to a diagnosis of ocular myasthenia gravis and aggressively treating it. To this day, and for about the past 5 years, Jeff still experiences intermittent double vision, but immediately contacts and works closely with Dr. Katz on his treatments which usually ends up with a different mix of treatments to resolve the symptom.

“You want to be the captain of your own ship, and you have to take control of your own situation.” This is Jeff’s greatest advice to all those that are experiencing their first diagnosis of MG or if they’ve been going through it for many years. It’s what led him to do his own research as he went through the symptoms of MG and came across the MGFA and the website. Through emails and newsletters, he heard about the MG Walk, and became very active a few years ago in raising funds and awareness for the campaign. He participated in his first Walk in 2013, and through the generous support of his family, friends, and coworkers, he ended up becoming a top fundraiser for the Ohio Walk.

Jeff is excited to be the Local MG Walk Hero for the Central Ohio Walk this year, and will be participating with one of his sons. It’s important for him to have his children, as well as his family and friends, understand what this disease is, and how it impacts the lives of those affected. The MG Walk is Jeff’s chance to be a part of something bigger than himself, and a chance to connect and learn from others who are going through their own journeys with MG.

He is very honored to be the Local Hero this year and take this opportunity to educate others on the effects of MG, and inspire those affected to take the reins of their disease and work together with their doctors and support system to find the best treatments. He is very thankful for his family who have been so patient and helpful through all the challenges.
