We are thrilled to announce that the 2017 Hawaii MG Walk Hero is…John Martin!

John is very new to the MG community as he was only first diagnosed with myasthenia gravis 2 years ago. He had been experiencing a common first symptom which was double vision. It got to the point where he had a hard time driving and a hard time walking because his depth perception was so off. He went to get his eyes checked, but the doctor just couldn’t figure out what was going on. Luckily for John, his wife, who works as a nurse, was talking with Dr. Rao, a neurologist at Wilcox Hospital and told him what was going on with John. After an initial meeting with, Dr. Rao had a pretty good idea that John was experiencing MG, and after a couple of tests, his diagnosis was confirmed. Today, John is on a regimen of medication that has his MG under control, and he’s ready to get involved in bringing more awareness to Hawaii.

It was last year that John connected with Paula McGinnis. Paula vacations a lot of Hawaii and realized that there were patients of MG, such as herself, living on Kauai. Having created a successful Walk the last few years in Metropolis, IL, she was ready to do the same in Hawaii. She and her friend connected with John, who is the security and permit coordinator for the Parks and Rec department, to talk about the date and location of this new Walk. It was at this time, she learned John had MG as well, and this was the first time John had ever really met anyone who was living with myasthenia gravis.

Before his diagnosis, John knew nothing about MG, and realized there were many on the islands who don’t seem to really know about it too. As the Hawaii MG Walk Hero, he hopes to change that. He wants more people to know about myasthenia gravis and have more information about it so that it can lead to a quicker diagnosis, better treatments, and ultimately a cure. There may be a small number of people who know they have MG, but John hopes that the Walk will bring more light to MG and what it is so that others will know there is help, especially if they are just starting to experience symptoms.  He is so excited to be a large part in making this Walk a reality and bring much needed awareness and education to the islands.
