What is the MG WALK?
The MG Walk is the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America’s (MGFA) signature awareness & fundraising campaign. This event is designed to provide hope for the thousands of families forced to face the challenges caused by myasthenia gravis (MG) in a truly inspirational day of caring & fun!

 

How is the money used?

With monies raised from the MG Walks, the MGFA is committed to finding a cure for myasthenia gravis and closely related disorders, improving treatment options, and providing information and support to people with myasthenia gravis through research, education, community programs, and advocacy.

                   
 
The growth in contributions over the last three years is exciting considering the weak economy since 2009. National branding and new programs such as the MG Walk and MG Golf contributed to this positive growth of nearly 65% during the 2009-2011 period. During that same period, 2009 through 2011, MGFA has invested $2,247,000 in research, awareness/education and patient services. Administrative and fundraising expenses increased during this period by $40,000 while contributions went up by $365,000. It’s important to note that Administrative and Fundraising expenses met the standards set by the BBB Wise Giving Alliance and National Health Council. As we look to the future we see lots of opportunities to further invest in programs of importance to the MG community!

 

How do I register?

Click here to register now!  Registration is FREE. Once your registration is complete, you will receive a confirmation email receipt.  If you don't wish to register online, print out a registration form and fax the completed form to us at 914-636-5585, or call 1-855-MG WALKS (1-855-649-2557) and we will be happy to take your registration over the phone.
 
 How much does it cost to participate?

There is no registration fee and no required minimum fundraising to participate, but we challenge every registered walker to ask 10 friends for $20 and raising at least $200 each.

What happens after I register for the Walk?

Immediately following your registration for the MG Walk, you will have a Personal Fundraising Page and can begin customizing it.  Watch our video to learn more about how to make the most of the resources you have at your disposal! We also have a Personal Page tutorial you can download for detailed information. What is a Walk Team?

Forming teams is a great way to build morale and camaraderie among co-workers, family members and friends. Teams are led by a team captain and are made up of five or more members including the Captain. However, there is no limit to the number of team members you can have and the greater the team, the more awareness and funds for MG!!!

 

Is it hard being a team captain?

Serving as a Team Captain does require some work, but the MG Walk office is ready and able to support your efforts AND you will find it extremely rewarding to recruit, motivate and organize your friends, family and co-workers for a day of hope and fun.  See the Tools You Can Use page for our exclusive Team Captain’s Guide.

 

How do I register as a Team?

Simply choose a team name, set a goal and register as a team captain. See our Team UP page for more information.

 

Are pets, bicycles and in line skates allowed?

Bicycles and in line skates are not allowed. Pets are welcome on leashes at most Walk sites, but please check with the MG Walk office to be sure.    Please keep in mind that not everyone is comfortable with pets, many people are allergic, and many animals react differently in large crowds than they do at home. 

 

I’m walking and my family will join me. Should they register for the MG Walk?
Yes. All walkers, regardless of age, must register to participate in the MG Walk.  This is for your safety and so that each participant qualifies for fundraising incentives, including the $100 raised to receive the event t-shirt

 

Can my child participate in the Walk?

The Walk is for all ages and with a little help from an adult, children have the potential to be great fundraisers. Who could say no to a child who wants to raise money for a cause he/she is personally connected to?

 

Can I register for the MG Walk the day of the event?
Yes. While you are encouraged to pre-register for the MG Walk, we do offer registration on the day of the walk. When you arrive at the Walk site, proceed to New Registration. Also keep in mind, by registering prior to the Walk, you will have more time to maximize your fundraising!

 

How long is the route?

The MG Walk is a non-competitive event that should offer a shorter and longer options of about 1 and 3 miles but please check your local MG Walk website page for specific details.

 

What if it rains?

The MG Walk takes place rain or shine!   Unless there are extreme weather conditions, the event will take place. If rain is in the forecast, please dress accordingly so that fun will still be had by all!

 

What if there is not an MG Walk in my area? Can I still participate?

Absolutely! You can register for the Virtual Walk by clicking here.  You’ll have access to all the online fundraising tools and will be eligible for incentive prizes, just like all the MG Walks.

 

How can my company match my funds?

Every company has its own unique requirements so check with your Human Resources Department and ask for a matching gift form,  Make sure you include your Name, Walk location, and Team name, if applicable, so we can apply the match correctly.  The completed matching gift form can be mailed to:        MGFA - attn. MG Walk, 355 Lexington Avenue, 15th Floor, New York, NY 10017 or emailed to Info@MGWalk.org.
 
 

Will the matching gift display on my personal page?

Yes! As soon as the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America receives the matching funds from your company, we will post it to the website for viewing.

If you don't want to wait for us to receive and process your matching gift  for it to show in your overall total, you can log in to your participant center and enter it yourself as a pledge. Just log in, then select the button "View Donations" on the left side of the page. A new page will open and give you the option to "Enter Donations Made Offline"

 

How do I turn in donations?

 Funds raised online are automatically directed to MGFA. For funds raised offline, you may bring them to your local MG Walk site or mail them directly to:       MGFA - attn MG Walk, 355 Lexington Avenue, 15th Floor, New York, NY 10017.    Remember to include the name of the walker in the memo portion of the check. 
If you don't want to wait for us to receive and process your offline gifts in order for them to show in your overall total, you can log in to your participant center and enter it yourself as a pledge. Just log in, then select the button "View Donations" on the left side of the page. A new page will open and give you the option to "Enter Donations Made Offline"
 

Who do I make checks payable to?

Please make checks payable to the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America or MGFA.

 

How long does it take for checks to show up on my account?
It depends how many checks are coming in the office and how close it is to the event. Checks that are mailed prior to the event can take 3-4 weeks to show up on your account (unless you have already entered them online - see above instructions in blue.)  Any donations that you hand in the day of the event can take 1-2 weeks to show up on your account. To avoid the wait, you can always encourage your donors to sponsor you online. Online donations are safe and easy.

 

Are donations tax deductible and how do I get a receipt? 
Yes. All donations are tax deductible to the fullest extent allowed by law. Your cleared check or credit card transaction serves as a receipt.

What do I need to bring with me to MG Walk? 

After you register, you will be receiving follow up emails up until your walk Including more on how to maximize your fundraising and prepare for your MG walk participation.

 

What do I get on the day of MG Walk? 
When you turn in $100 on or before Walk day, you will receive an official MG Walk t-shirt at the event.  To receive an official t-shirt after the MG Walk, you must raise $150 and complete the online prize claim form by the deadline.  Virtual Walkers must raise $100 and complete a claim form to receive their official MG Walk t-shirt.
 
How do I obtain my incentives? 
Approximately two weeks after the walk, the online prize redemption site will be open. Simply log on, fill in your information and claim your prize. It will be mailed to you shortly. Fundraising totals will be updated weekly once your rewards site/page opens. Check it out now at www.MGWalkRewards.org 

 

If I'm on a team, do I have separate check-in?
No. Team members check-in individually, and then proceed to the special Team Meeting Area to meet their teammates.

 

How does Team Fundraising work?

All donations should be made on behalf of an individual walker; and all funds raised by a team member roll up into the team total.  Fundraising prizes and incentives are based on individual fundraising success.  Teams can fundraise together and distribute the donations among team members.

 

What is the Gold Toes all about and how do I become a member?
All participants who pledge to raise $1,000 or more by the fundraising deadline (about one month following event) of your local MG Walk are automatically enrolled as members in the Gold Toes Club. Members will receive a special incentive and recognition at the Walk or if a Virtual Walker, on the MG Walk website.

 

What if I can’t finish the Walk?
No problem! All walkers will be allowed to walk as little or as much of the route as they can.

What do I wear at the MG Walk?
Dress in layers so you are warm at the start and finish lines. In addition, wear comfortable walking shoes. Please note: there is no baggage check at the MG Walk.

What food is available at the MG Walk?

Light snacks and water will be available at the start line, rest stop on the route and the finish line. A full breakfast and lunch are not provided. If you have special dietary restrictions or needs, please bring your own food and/or beverages.
